Global Libraries – Bulgaria Foundation is launching a new one-year programme with funding from the Public Diplomacy Section of the United States Embassy in Sofia. Titled ‘Depend on You’, the project aims to promote democracy education and participation in Bulgaria by positioning public libraries as centres of information and non-formal education, and by training librarians as educators. The project will boost the activities of libraries and enhance participatory democracy and civic activity in Bulgarian society.
For the project pilot, civil society experts alongside the five participating libraries with American Corners in Sofia, Burgas, Plovdiv, Varna and Veliko Tarnovo, will train librarians to lead democracy education classes, focused on young Bulgarians finishing high school and after. These classes will address both practical and theoretical themes such as how to vote and why citizens should take part in the electoral process. At the end of the project, the results will be disseminated so that other Bulgarian libraries may become more active in providing information and services related to democratic processes.
