Be Aware What You Share: Combating misinformation through media literacy

A project of the Global Libraries – Bulgaria Foundation, funded by the Public Diplomacy Department of the US Embassy in Sofia .

  • The Be Aware What You Share project aims to promote media literacy among young people (15-19 years) and adults in Bulgaria, using public libraries as centers for information and non-formal education.
  • The curricula adapted for this project will be pilot tested in the American Corners in the regional libraries in Varna and Sofia. School and libraries are traditionally involved in formal and non-formal education.

Today, information and media literacy are perceived as crucial for the development of informed and critically thinking society. This project is focused on increasing media literacy skills of teachers and librarians to be on their turn trainers and mentors of young people as well as adults. The regional libraries in the Bulgarian cities Varna and Sofia are inviting teachers and librarians from those regions who want to improve their knowledge and studies in the field of media literacy to participate in the trainings. The education of the future trainers will be conducted in a hybrid form, according to the needs of the trainees, and will cover topics such as:

  • Misinformation and types of misleading news
  • Importance of media literacy and critical analysis of media content
  • How social networks make money and why misinformation and propaganda are widespread there
  • How algorithms work in social networks
  • How to recognize and respond to misinformation
  • Security online
  • Netiquette
